Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ)

Revolving doors have proven their cost effective benefits to facilities all over the world.  The most common benefit of revolving doors include substantial cost savings with heating and air conditioning.  When adding access control features to a revolving door system, the elimination of a posted security guard will provide additional cost savings that will allow a security revolving door to virtually pay for itself in a very short amount of time.

What sets International Entrance Control Security Revolving Doors apart from the rest?
International's patented scanning system places our revolving doors far above the competition. By incorporating state of the art scanning detection, IEC revolving doors will greatly increase security while providing savings on your security, air conditioning and heating costs.  In addition to the cost savings obtained by installing our security revolving doors, our doors include additional safety features that are not available on any other door in the market.  This is all done while allowing smooth flowing pedestrian traffic that is monitored.

How does the Scanning System work?
The patented detection system detects the presence or absence of a person or object within the revolving doors quadrants.  When a user with a validated badge enters the door, the validated quadrant will display a green traffic indicator light and allow the authorized user passage.  Non-authorized users will be detected by the scanning system, and be immediately rejected to where they attempted to gain access.

What are my options as far as architectural design is concerned?
While standard sizes and finishes are more economical, doors can be custom built to meet a wide range of architectural styles and finishes.  International Entrance Control is the only manufacturer that can provide complete revolving doors for all types of projects manufactured in aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, brass and even wood.  Stainless steel and brass doors include fully welded joints, eliminating hairline joints on the curved sidewalls and door wings.  We offer an unmatched selection of revolving doors that no other manufacturer in the industry can match for your project!

What can I expect for my traffic flow when using an IEC security entrance?
Designed to be used quadrant by quadrant in both directions simultaneously, the IEC Phoenix series 4-wing revolving doors accomplish a flow rate of approximately 20-28 authorized people per minute in each direction when operating at maximum efficiency under lower security settings.  For example, one door could process up to 420 people in 15 minutes, while two doors could process 400 to 420 people in less than 7 minutes.  Keep in mind, the higher the security settings on the door, the more discriminating the security features will be, providing a slightly lower throughput.

I realize authorized usage can be bi-directional and quadrant by quadrant, but how is an unauthorized person denied access?
The state-of-the-art scanning system detects the unauthorized entry, causing the door to stop and reverse, forcing the unauthorized user outside the secured area. The scanning system then secures all areas within the revolving door.

How will revolving doors reduce my security costs?
As security guard salaries vary from one location to another, three different salary ranges are taken into account to provide a simple analysis on savings obtained from the implementation of a security revolving door that will allow your entrance to remain "unmanned".  In addition to the hourly rates, an additional cost analysis is provided based on three work schedules throughout a single work day.  All costs provided are based on yearly wages, and include an estimate of benefits and taxes included in those wages.  IEC entrances will eliminate the need for manned security.  A 24-hour security post may cost in excess of $100,000 per year. The overhead can be easily eliminated in less than one year.

How will revolving doors reduce my heating and air conditioning costs?
As calculated by ASHRAE, air infiltration in the motor-driven revolving door is approximately 32 cf per passage compared to 900 cf per passage in a single swing door, or 1,800 cf per passage through a pair of doors or a sliding door. IEC entrances reduce costs 25-30% by maximizing the effect of air conditioning and heating throughout the building.  Below is a simple chart that outlines cost savings in four different locations around the United States with different climates.

Below is additional information on cost savings obtained based on heating and air conditioning costs:

Why is International Entrance Control the Leader In Innovation and Environmental Control?
The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) set the specifications for air filtration and energy conservation in new building design. These two standards - "90A" and "90.1" - with testing in accordance with ANSI/ASTM E-283 are required by the model building codes.

International is proud to announce and confirm that can provide the first and only revolving door to successfully pass this test to date. The importance of this is that when a swing or sliding door opens, huge amounts of air changes place with the outdoors. With an International Entrance Control Revolving Door, your entrance is... "Always Open - Always Closed".

Additionally, all revolving doors are required by the "BOCA" National Building Code and the National Fire Protection Agencies' "Life Safety Code" to be equipped with a speed control to limit the door speed and an emergency collapsing mechanism to allow for emergency egress. All International Entrance Control Revolving Doors meet or exceed all known federal building code requirements.

Positive Air Control

The "always open - always closed" feature of revolving doors stops drafts, keeps lobbies draft-free, and seals out exterior dirt and dust. In retail stores this means less soiled merchandise loss. In all buildings it reduces cleaning and decorating costs. Revolving doors are ideal for entrances to pressurized areas. The ease of operation in revolving doors is unique. A minimum number of pounds of pressure is needed to move them regardless of wind pressures. This is especially helpful in tall buildings, where inside suction drafts with up to 60 m.p.h. velocity often occur. Under such circumstances, it might require more than 75 pounds pull to open a swing door.  These issues are eliminated with the implementation of revolving doors.

PROFITS FROM EXTRA FLOOR SPACE

Floor areas right up to the door itself may be used profitably when you have a revolving door entrance. Customers, tenants, or sales personnel can use this space in complete comfort, entirely free from drafts, heat cold, dirt, and outside noise. Elimination of the wasted space around swing doors will reduce overhead.

Positive Traffic Control

In revolving doors alone, traffic is automatically divided into two lanes. No person entering the door can block the one on his way out. Case records show that revolving doors handle more traffic - with maximum safety - than any other type of entrance.

Automatic Collapsing for Emergency Egress

If emergencies arise, International revolving doors permit immediate unobstructed access to the outside (fail safe). The basic design of the mechanism is such that excess pressure against any two wings in opposite directions automatically release the wings allowing them to swing free. All four wings are collapsible for completely free passage for emergency egress.
